Winter in the High Tatras

Let´s enjoy a great atmosphere of the smallest grand mountains in the world and plenty of wonderful experiences which the High Tatras region can offer you during this winter.

 

We would like to recommend you these popular winter activities in the Tatra mountains:

  • Winter hiking

Although there is a winter closure of some hiking trails in the High Tatras valid from 1.11. to 14.6. there are still approx. 20 km of marked tourist trails in the alpine zone available during the winter so that the tourists can enjoy their winter adventure. Don't miss to plan your winter hike to the one of the 12 whole-year-round-open alpine chalets, which are still working but in a limited "covid mode“.

 

  • Cross-country skiing

The area of Štrbské Pleso offers several cross-country skiing tracks with various levels of difficulty in the total length of 25 km. There are some cross-country skiing tracks also in Tatranská Lomnica, Starý Smokovec and in the foothills too.

Cross-country skiing is one of the activities which you can absolutely enjoy even in this pandemic situation.

 

  • Skiing

The High Tatras ski resorts are one of the best in Slovakia and offer 24 km of well-groomed ski slopes, perfect services and great winter experiences in the resorts of Tatranská Lomnica, Starý Smokovec and Štrbské Pleso. However, from 1st January 2021, due to the pandemic situation, the ski resorts are temporarily closed.

  • Ski touring

Ski touring combines alpine hiking and skiing and is becoming still more and more popular in the High Tatras (mainly in this pandemic situation). In the region there are ski slopes ideal for ski tourers beginners.  More experienced ski tourers can enjoy endless adventures that the Tatras offers for example in the valleys with virgin snow. Ski tourers and climbers are allowed to enter precious alpine environment in the High Tatras only from 15th December to 15th April. Before you start your trip it is necessary to check the current weather and avalanche situation and in case of a trip outside the marked trails to be accompanied with a professional mountain guide.

 

  • Ice climbing

Ice climbing is one of the most interesting sports with lot of adrenaline where you can enjoy such a unique experience but also admire the majestic power of the nature in creating this icefall beauty. According to the fact that the ice climbing is mostly done in the locations apart from marked tourist trails you have to be accompanied by a certified local mountain guide or you have to have a valid climbing license.

 

  • Snowshoeing

Set out for a trip with a professional guide or just rent a pair of snow shoes and start to enjoy this extraordinary experience.

 

  • Nordic Walking

Nordic Walking is a great physical activity that engages the whole body.  There are many marked trails for Nordic Walking or running, so the only what you have to do is to walk around and discover a number of beautiful trails.
